Couples Therapy
Couples Counselling
We at Fuller Life Psychology are passionate about teaching couples how to love their relationship.
The goal of couples therapy is to:
-
build emotional intimacy and security,
-
work together towards the goals and promises they made to each other through their relationship,
-
for partners to navigate through inevitable conflict without damaging each other and create satisfying lasting relationship.
The relationship between partners can have a significant impact on each others mental health but also the mental and emotional health of children in the relationship.
“Connection is why we're here. We are hardwired to connect with others, it's what gives purpose and meaning to our lives, and without it there is suffering.”
- Brene Brown
Our Approach and why
Fuller Life Psychology uses Gottman Method Couple Therapy (GMCT) when
supporting couples. GMCT is based on 40 years of research conducted by
clinical psychologist Dr. John Gottman. The Gottman approach is practical
and easy to understand and follow, it teaches couples skills they can implement
immediately and continue to use after therapy without the support of the
therapist.

We want couples to learn to:
-
Build friendship
-
Nurture fondness and admiration
-
Enhance romance and intimacy
-
Manage conflict constructively
-
Create shared meaning Communicate and feel heard
-
Relapse prevention

Couples suitable for therapy:
We support all types of relationships; heterosexual, homosexual, de-facto,
married, dating or engaged.
-
Couples experiencing significant relationship distress
-
Couples wanting to learn life-long relationship skills to
 prosper their relationship, and
-
Premarital couples wanting to learn the skills research has
shown to predict a successful marriage.

Sooner is better
Research suggest that it takes couples on average 6 years
before reaching out for relationship support. We recommend
seeking support sooner is better. Repairing relationship ruptures
of a couple of months is much quicker than a build up over many years.
Assessment Process:
Couples Counseling is initially broken into a minimum of 4 sessions with the the following structure:
-
Session 1: Joint session – Assessment of couple and presenting issues (90 minutes - $300);
-
Session 2: Individual assessment (Partner A) (50 minutes - $250)
-
Session 3: Individual assessment (Partner B) (50 minutes - $250)
-
Session 4: Joint session discuss all results and treatment planning (50 minutes - $250)

Between Session 1 and 2, both partners will be asked to complete the Relationship Checkup (RC) which cost $39 (USD). The more information that is provided in the comprehensive psychometric questionnaire the more specifically the therapist can tailor your treatment plan. The RC is completed outside of session and needs to be completed separately from your partner.
We strongly suggest treatment sessions are booked with no more than 2 weeks between them.
